September 11th, 2001

10620635_10152424811968717_2627590849727264941_nSeventeen years ago, this day changed everyone’s life. 2,977 people died today as they were going to work. This is the first September 11th that I’m not in the U.S. Coast Guard. I’m proud of my service to the country during those days and the ones that followed but the last few years of my career, I would be mostly on leave or liberty. Maybe subconsciously I was avoiding it. I rarely watch the news on this day. I’d be lying if it didn’t make me anxious now. One of the reasons it affects me so much is that I saw people and communities directly influenced by the loss from the events of that day and even if you have only a shred of empathy, you can never really close that door. You can’t really forget…

Hurricane Florence

20180907_174918Normally, I’d run inland and avoid the weather but I’m with some friends and I’m sure they could use some help pre and post hurricane, so I’m going to stay put until it blows over. Then I’ll head North….

Anyway, Furiosa has been enjoying the rural life. She can herd the chickens and goats with human help. I think I’d like to have some acreage somewhere and do something similar….just not South Carolina, it’s to hot and humid for me.

Prequel: Big Bend National Park, Texas

Camped two nights here. Very hot but well worth it. The hike out on the window trail was worth the effort. I wish I would have chosen to see it at sunset but next time.

Spent four hours off road driving the Old Ore Road, Furi was not impressed with my offroad skills or risk assessment judgment.

The drive out to Del Rio Texas was a slog. Ended up at a Motel 6 but hey, it’s next to a Whataburger.

Prequel: South Fork Recreation area, Spring Creek, Nevada

20180720_0850321It’s not easy sightseeing with the trailer full of stuff. Don’t even ask if it has brakes, it doesn’t. I can travel great but you can’t rapidly stop and u-turn, by the time you find a place to turn around, you’re five to ten miles away. Another thing, Town gas stations can be a bit of a tight maneuver. Eventually, I might store both the trailer and motorcycles. I can’t ride with Furi unless she’s puppysat. I’m mostly just transporting one so I can fix it with Chris and then head up to Sturgis. Chris’s wife Jodi will watch the Furious one while we are up there. Lastly, navigating around the East Coast would be an utter nightmare, we’ll see. Another additional issue with the setup is when you set the tent up, your stationary unless you fold it back up. I’d like to eventually get the Smittybilt Scout trailer. It would be much easier to get around once you set up camp.

wp-15321285178711Anyway, South Fork State Recreation Area is a cool campground that’s $15 bucks a night and has showers. It’s 95 (dry) degrees out and windy but not that bad. It would be great if you had a boat! I set up camp with a shrieking Furi. Filled up the water. I let Furi swim for a bit in the lake. I then fed a damp but cool and content Furi. I cooked a Cheeseburger and took the pup for a walk. Texted Dickie, talked to James for a little bit.

Trying to figure out where I’ll make it next. I’d like to avoid Salt Lake City. Maybe I’ll hit up Moab for the third time…

Prequel:Burns, Oregon

I’ve been kicking around the idea that when I retired, I’d travel and visit people and places for a bit. This is going to be a site where people can see what I’m doing and also may participate in this project. I have a vague idea how I want to go forth with it and  would also welcome any advice. Right now I’m heading for Colorado to do some repairs on my Motorcycle. Then I’m going to head up to Sturgis, South Dakota for the Motorcycle Rally. After that I want to explore New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Texas. I’ll eventually make my way to Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Then I’ll make my way up the East Coast to New Jersey and then Maine. Nothing is written in stone and the timeline is very open since I’m retired. Who’s interested?
